Charlotte Observer is taking a bunch of its ad design overseas, as it kills 25 of 41 jobs and outsources design work abroad.
Think it'll have any effect on quality? Positive or negative?

I'm not particularly surprised by this article, as outsourcing has become common in most industries to save costs, but I think its impact on advertising could be more unusual than in most industries. On the one hand, the article mentions that the newspaper will have access to better technology without having to pay for it, which could improve design quality, but considering the link between the creative concepts of ads and their designs, I think outsourcing designs to another country with another distinct culture and ways of expressing themselves could lead to a breakdown in what these ads communicate to readers. There are plenty of well-made ads that fail to capture a reader's interest, attention, or understanding, though, so if I had to guess, I would say the overall impact is likely to be negative.
I really had never thought about newspapers outsourcing jobs before. I agree with Kristin, it seems odd to think about someone in a completely different culture with a different perspective and a foreign culture to be designing newspapers read by Americans. With the state of the economy here it seems like a shame to remove possibilities for employment...maybe they could turn to recent grads like us instead? :-)
Wow! Outsourcing design? That's strange to me. It makes me wonder about how valuable it is to learn about journalism and design in college. Some people think that college is not necessary to learn journalism and designing, these are things people can learn just through practice. Outsourcing design only makes me wonder more about this belief. If we can send out design to others to do, what is the value of all of our education here at the Journalism School?
